The characteristics of Gallium

Time: 2019-09-29

Gallium is the most dispersed metal with the characteristics of “dispersion”. It is silver-white, with a density of 5.904g/m3 and a melting point of 29.78°C, which also can be melted in the hands. It is one of three kinds of liquid metals with melting point below human body temperature (gallium, cesium, mercury). However, its boiling point is very high, up to 2403 °C. The liquid gallium has a very large range, but the liquid range of the three low-melting, high-boiling liquid metals is the largest, reaching 2373 °C. Therefore, the gallium is loaded into a quartz thermometer and can be used to measure a high temperature of 1500 °C. This thermometer is commonly used to measure the temperature of reactors and atomic reactors.

Gallium  increases in volume by 3.2% from liquid to solid and changes from silvery white to blue-gray. The first ionization energy of gallium is only 5.999 eV, so its freezing point is very low. Due to the complex structure with stable solids, pure liquid gallium has a significant tendency to over-cool, and it can remain liquid for a long time under the solid phase point, as well as in the condition of ice water. Gallium has good superconducting properties at low temperatures, and its resistance is almost equal to zero at approximately -373 ° C, thus occupying a place in the field of superconducting materials.

Gallium is an excellent electronic material and known as the backbone of the electronics industry, it is the basic resource of high technology. Gallium is mainly used in the manufacture of semiconductor materials, optical glass, vacuum tubes, light-emitting diodes, and gallium arsenide laser diodes, etc.
